International at Eastern – Tejiri’s Story
February 2nd, 2024
Originally from Nigeria, Tejiri moved to Canada in June of 2023. A civil engineer by training, he had ambitions to set up a nursing home back in Nigeria to care for the aging population but needed to learn the intricacies of long-term care. Wanting to build a solid foundation and to understand better what would go into building a nursing home and long-term care, he began looking at options for going back to school. After a few friends recommended Eastern College, he began to look more into the Personal Support Worker program.
Now a Personal Support Worker student, Tejiri says he’s enjoying his time at Eastern and is learning and building the skills he’ll need for the future. He finds his instructor knowledgeable and approachable and enjoys learning through the instructor’s demonstrations and hands-on approach in the classroom. The half-day classes also mean that he’s able to balance his studies without compromising his work commitments. While he hasn’t begun his internship yet, Tejiri currently works in a group home where he’s able to apply what he’s learned in the classroom in real-world scenarios.
On campus, Tejiri loves meeting other students from different parts of the world. In addition to learning in the classroom, he says that the diverse student body lets him learn about different cultures and make connections and build friendships with people from different walks of life. Ultimately, he feels that Eastern is equipping him with the knowledge and skills that he needs to not only become career-ready but also put him on the path to reach his goals.
