Eastern College Launches Updated Medical Office Administration Program Featuring HICA Certification

Halifax, NS; Eastern College is proud to announce the relaunch of its Medical Office Administration is a robust and reimagined program that reflects the evolving demands of today’s healthcare sector.
The updated MOA program now includes eligibility for the Health Information–Certified Associate (HICA) credential from the Canadian Health Information Management Association (CHIMA), a nationally recognized certification that gives graduates a competitive edge in the healthcare field. The curriculum has been modernized to include simulation-based learning, advanced billing and electronic medical records (EMRs) training, and expanded hospital and clinical administration content, ensuring graduates are well-prepared for the realities of modern healthcare environments.

Program Highlights
- HICA Certification Eligibility: Graduates are eligible to pursue the Health Information–Certified Associate (HICA) credential through CHIMA, a distinction recognized by healthcare employers across Canada.
- Extended Internship: An 8-week (200-hour) practicum gives students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in real-world medical, clinical, or hospital settings.
- Simulation-Based Learning: Hands-on practice with electronic medical records (EMRs), billing systems, and patient scheduling tools to build job-ready confidence.
- Hospital and Clinical Focus: Strengthened modules in unit coordination, medical terminology, and patient documentation prepare graduates for diverse healthcare roles.
- Technology-Driven Curriculum: Training in Microsoft Office, EMRs, digital literacy, and privacy compliance ensure graduates are workplace ready.
- Career Growth Pathways: Graduates may qualify for advanced standing into Health Information Management (HIM) programs for continued professional development.
- Inclusive and Patient-Centered Approach: Integrates diversity, equity, inclusion, and empathy-based communication aligned with CHIMA standards.
Graduates of the 46-week program are prepared for roles such as Medical Office Administrator, Medical Receptionist, Unit Clerk, Billing Clerk, or Clinical Assistant in clinics, hospitals, and other healthcare environments.
